Workshops for surrogate grandmothers and grandfathers: Childcare with heart and a wealth of life experience

Borrowed grandmas and grandpas are a tremendous asset for our society," says Lukas Jaeger, project advisor at famPLUS, who, together with the Regional Office Berlin of ElternService AWO GmbH, designed the training workshop. The life experience and warmth that borrowed grandparents bring make them particularly sought-after caregivers for families. "Borrowed grandmas and grandpas usually provide a longer-term constant for children than students, for example, who often have changing schedules at university," says Lukas Jaeger.

The two consulting and placement agencies famPLUS and ElternService AWO have been observing the increasing demand for surrogate grandmothers and grandfathers for some time now. Workshops in several major cities are now intended to give interested parties a comprehensive insight into the role of a surrogate grandmother or grandfather and provide already active seniors with an opportunity for exchange and further training. Additionally, the participants will of course have the opportunity to be placed by the two consulting and placement agencies after the workshop.

On the agenda of the workshops are legal topics, but also educational issues, children's needs and development, as well as conflict management and finding a good way of interacting with each other. After each two-day workshop, the participants take home not only their training certificate but also many new insights. The conclusion after the pilot event in Berlin in November was consistently positive: "Particularly valuable for the participants was the exchange with each other and the feeling of not being alone with questions and difficult situations. We see this as a mandate for us as mediation agencies: We especially want to support the older caregivers, who no longer have these opportunities for exchange as readily available as, for example, students or child day care workers," explains Katharina Haack-Radlanski from ElternService AWO Berlin.

Due to the positive feedback we have received, we are now offering additional dates in Hamburg and Munich," says famPLUS Managing Director Dr. Markus Solf.

Both famPLUS and ElternService AWO provide qualified and reliable caregivers to working parents to better balance work and family life. Both agencies work closely with medium-sized businesses, corporations, and organizations nationwide to support their employees in organizing childcare and care for relatives.

The workshop date in Hamburg:

March 21 and 22, 2015, Hamburg, Social Impact Lab, Pastorenstr. 16–18 Sat 10:00 AM–4:30 PM including lunch break, Sun 9:30 AM–1:00 PM
