And who takes care of me?" – Pilot project to promote the balance between work and family

Many parents are familiar with spontaneous emergencies in organizing childcare, such as when important meetings are scheduled at short notice, shift changes are unavoidable, or regular childcare arrangements are unavailable.

Since June 1, 2014, the University of Regensburg and the University Hospital, together with the family service provider "famPLUS," have been supporting working parents with a new pilot project. The offer includes two components: short-term childcare in emergency situations and demand-oriented childcare. In specific cases, employees contact the cooperation partner "famPLUS," which specializes in the provision of qualified childcare.

In case of short-term care needs, "famPLUS" quickly organizes a substitute from the team of "Schäfchenwiese" employees. "Schäfchenwiese" is a partner organization of "famPLUS" that can provide appropriate professionals (pediatric nurses or midwives) on site in Regensburg and the surrounding area. If the request is made by phone or email by 6:00 p.m. the day before at "famPLUS," care can already be provided the next day. Currently, there is no limitation on how frequently employees may use the emergency child care service.

In the case of long-term, needs-based childcare, individual counseling is provided by "famPLUS". Depending on the specific circumstances, childminders, substitute grandmothers, nannies, or au pairs are matched as accurately as possible. Since this can take up to six weeks, the need should be registered as early as possible.

A large portion of the costs is covered by the employer. Therefore, parents only pay a contribution of 5 € per hour for emergency childcare. If parents arrange for a childminder, nanny, or temporary grandma through “famPLUS” on a long-term basis, only 100 € of the total 300 € placement fee is due.

In this context, our special thanks go to all the spokespersons of the DFG-funded research projects who provided the necessary financial resources and made this initiative possible in the first place!
